About

Kindred Spirits Youth Mentoring was founded because of the urgent need to care for our children. We connect youth with nurturing adults in a mentoring relationship. Our focus is supporting our student’s academic achievement and social emotional learning on school campuses in the Sacramento region. Mentoring services are provided by volunteers supported by KSYM staff. We coordinate directly with school staff and teachers to tailor the attention needed for each student in one-on-one weekly meet-ups over a school year. Our mentoring emphasis is to help address academic performance and behavioral issues that may be affecting school and life success.

Our Story.

Our founder started mentoring what were described at the time as at-risk youth in the mid 1990’s when he discovered the joy of connecting with and helping young people navigate a path forward. In its simplest form, mentoring is giving a person the gift of attention. What is amazing and unexpected is how a little time, given consistently, can make an oversized difference in a young person’s life, sparking curiosity, potential and confidence. This gift can also profoundly awaken a sense of purpose, meaning and understanding in those who give.

Realizing the power of human connection is the core of what we do, as we strive to bring mentoring relationships to as many young people as possible.

We believe change occurs one child at a time when we choose to take the time to offer each child what they need to take the next step forward. We have learned that young people, no matter their background, can reach their potential when they feel safe, are exposed to opportunities and are loved with consistency. Our vision is that each of these caring relationships individually and collectively have the power to change our world by changing how we see each other. Our resolve is for less fear and more understanding, less trauma and violence and more joy and love, less poverty and despair and more prosperity.

What inspires us is that the simple, most direct actions given by every-day people can be the most meaningful and impactful, caring for the world one child at a time.
